I had once read something by John Cage that talked about a hierarchy of activity. It has been years so I probably have deatails wrong but it created a ranking something like this: creation > performance > thoughtful listening > passive acceptance and seemed to apply to all manner of activity and life not just to music, although it used a musical metaphor. Not sure which of his many writing I saw this in. Does any know where it came from and it's correct formulation?
