"As an idea of silence. What was taken away from people was their ability to speak. I wanted a memorial that spoke without speaking.” With these words, Peter Eisenman presented a few weeks ago his most recent work – and his most controversial one – the memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, unveiled in Berlin after years of debate. Professionally speaking, it is a happy moment for the American architect who last year won the Leone d’Oro for lifetime’s work at the Venice Biennale and who, following an extensive retrospective in Vienna dedicated to his work, is now the subject of a major exhibition in Italy, at Modena.
