                   Design is a bridge: between the virtual and the material, the
                   human body and clothing (fashion), public space and the
                   individual (urban design). The designer, for his or her part, is
                   often called upon to play a destabilising role, one of change –
                   economic, political, cultural – with regards to existing forms,
                   meanings and iconographies. It is what is commonly defined as
                   fashion or trend.

                  What should not be forgotten is the capacity of design to effect
                   changes at a deeper and structural level. Think about the parts of
                   our contemporary cities that are often abandoned, the “vague
                   terrain”. Architects would like to redesign them with productivity in
                   mind. What if instead these abandoned parts of the city were
                   important for other reasons which are not apparent at first sight?
                   Vagueness can also have a positive side, for example preserving
                   someone’s memories to avoid restricting space in the mind. This
                   is an opportunity for a designer to elevate the complexity of this
                   space without destroying the individual.

                         If, we then think about the products of our everyday lives, we can
                   consider them as an accumulation of challenges and opportunities
                   for the designer. In these there is a chance to make people feel
                   less victims. How? Initiating a series of micro-interventions that
                   can however do a great deal to improve people’s conditions. For
                   example in a country such as Africa it could be possible to design
                   a house to help combat malaria, simply by avoiding the
                   accumulation of water and keeping mosquitoes at bay.

                    The true role of the designer is not visible to all at first glance but
                   it is very important. And what is more one should add that all of
                   us – including designers – are informal political subjects. A
                   famous example is that of the Argentinean madres in the piazza
                   at Maggio – they are first and foremost mothers but their political
                   role is undeniable. At a tangible level, there is a need to establish
                   a connection between the capacity and potential of a designer and
                   the opportunities offered by the European Union. With minimal
                   intervention one can create a narrative with a domino effect which
                   promotes a virtuous circle. And often this doesn’t need a great
                   deal of money.
